Chinese scientists develop metal laser melting 3D printer that can be used in space

The past year or so, we’ve noticed that 3D printing is being increasingly used in aerospace science. Not only is it being used to develop innovative components and instruments to improve space-borne equipment and to make life in space more comfortable (like these 3D printed coffee cups), scientists are also increasingly recognising the technology’s potential in space. After all, its theoretical applications are endless: any component that breaks in space could be replaced with a 3D printed replica.

Introducing the Digital Thread to EuroMold 2014

The EuroMold floor was bustling with an energetic crowd last week, and 3D Systems was in the middle of the fray sharing our latest and greatest developments in 3D printing and scanning technology. Included in our on-the-floor portfolio were printers as small as a coffeemaker (our micro-SLA ProJet 1200) and as large as the ProX 400, our latest in direct metal 3D printing, described by one show-goer as “a UFO from the future” that had seemingly landed at the corner of our booth. Also on the floor were our new Capture Mini 3D scanner, with twice the resolution and half the size of the Capture, opening up new opportunities for precise scans in small operations such as dental, jewelry and small electronics. The Touch haptic stylus also generated a lot of excitement as a new way to get hands on with digital through force-feedback modeling in virtual clay.

ReaLizer Unveils Their New SLM 125 Metal 3D Printer

There is little doubt that competition is heating up within the metal additive manufacturing space. The number of companies and new machines entering the market is sure to spark innovation, while lowering the price points at which these machines can be obtained. More and more companies are relying upon metal 3D printing as a way to produce end-use products, molds, and components for a variety of products and applications. The ability to fabricate complicated designs which are lighter, more structurally sound, and less expensive to produce than traditional manufacturing methods means that the demand for metal 3D printers will continue to soar.
