Nike Files Patent for Printing onto 3D Objects with Unique 3D Printer

We have known for some time now that Nike has been using 3D printing in the creation of several unique products. They aren’t the only apparel company doing so, and they certainly will be joined by many others in the months and years ahead. Back in February, we reported on a couple 3D printing related patents that Nike had filed. We have also seen the company use 3D printing in the creation of their Vapor Ultimate Cleat, as well as some other sporting goods. Without any doubt, Nike will continue to expand the use of 3D printing in both prototyping and the creation of customized end-use products. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone has gone on record predicting that Nike will be a pure software company within 10 years. While his prediction may seem a bit drastic, anything is possible within the 3D printing space.

NovaCentrix & nScrypt awarded $1M to develop all-in-one system for 3D printing electronics

Currently available 3D printers are typically limited to the printing of plastic and metal items in just one or two materials. But FlexTech Alliance, headquartered in San Jose, California, is devoted to fostering the growth, profitability and success of the flexible and printed electronics supply chain. FlexTech has announced the awarding of $1,291,000 to nScrypt and NovaCentrix to develop a next-generation 3D printing system for creating complex and functional objects.

Goldilocks Principle: Researchers Explore New Particle Manipulation Technique for 3D Printing

The Goldilocks Principle is a concept that can be applied to a number of different situations, and today, it’s making headlines to the contrary in regards to how enhancing microscopic molecules might work with furthering 3D printing. As a team of New York University scientists work to create ‘smart materials,’ which adapt to their environment, they have discovered that polymers and colloids tell a story of their own, and they are sharing this in a recent research paper in Nature Materials.

Universität Rostock: Neues 3-D-Druckverfahren für Siliziumkarbid aus Rostock

Rostock: 3-D-Druckverfahren stehen nach Ansicht von Experten kurz davor, die Industrieproduktion in Deutschland zu verändern. Christian Polzin von der Universität Rostock ist begeistert von dieser Technik. Der 34-jährige gebürtige Brandenburger, der während seines Studiums ein Industriepraktikum bei der Baker Hughes Incorporation in Houston/Texas absolvierte, hat ein neues 3D-Druckverfahren zur Herstellung keramischer Formkörper aus Aluminiumoxid und Siliziumkarbid entwickelt. „Für Innovationen ist der 3-D-Druck ein Beschleuniger“.

Local 3D printing hubs bring manufacturing back to U.S.: Smart America Expo

Imaginestics is a start-up out of West Lafayette, Indiana, founded by Nainesh Rathod. At the Smart America Expo, Rathod was part of a team that demonstrated the potential impact of „Smart Shape Technology“ on 3D printing and local manufacturing hubs.
The system lets you can take a picture of a part of a larger device with a mobile phone, and then identify a local retailer where this part can be found or instantly print it at a local neighborhood 3D printing service provider.

The demonstration showed how Smart Shape Technology — using novel shape search, active label, smart hubs and 3D printing technologies — can create local jobs and increase local skills.
