3D printable food is one of those things that sounds like a good idea, but the more you think about what is involved the sillier it becomes. Yes, the ability to 3D print identical food creations with a robot is pretty cool, but it is also rather inefficient in comparison to a skilled workforce. Since the very few food 3D printers that have actually managed to come to market are all based on FDM technology, the limitations of speed and resolution aren’t going to go away.

Waren bisher einzelne Drucker in der Lage spezifische Lebensmittel zu drucken, ist mit dem neuen Gerät ein wesentlicher Fortschritt gelungen.

Behold, The Easy Cheese 3D Printer!

One area within the 3D printing space which may be a bit slow to catch on, is that of food printing. Companies like Natural Machines have unveiled systems which will enable anyone to print intricate patterns with paste-like foods such as Nutella, pancake mix, and cookie dough. I think there is probably something about a machine printing out food which still needs to catch on before such culinary techniques really take off.

Eierkuchen oder Pfannkuchen: Egal wie die Mehlspeise lokal genannt wird, der Pancakebot druckt sie auf eine heiße Platte in der gewünschten Form aus. Möglich macht das ein Mechanismus, der an einen 3D-Drucker erinnert und per SD-Karte gesteuert werden kann. Wer will, kann die Entwicklung mitfinanzieren.

Could 2015 be the year of 3D printed food? You might almost start to believe it, considering the many promising projects and the supposedly tasty initial results. This year should be the year of the commercial Foodini, while the Taiwan 3D printer manufacturer XYZPrinting also unveiled its 3D food printer in early January. Thanks to a few other results, you might almost start believing in the coming of this holy grail of 3D printing.
