That, incidentally, is one of the reasons why the 3Doodler is so successful, as using the 3Doodler does not require any. To make 3D modeling easier to digest, a duo of French developers created Smoothie-3D, a free online software that, among other things, lets you easily extrapolate 3D models and textures from background 2D photos.

Software developer MXD3D has launched an open beta of a new model fixing software service called MakePrintable. They promise that the MakePrintable service will be able to automatically correct and repair most common, and even a few uncommon, problems with making 3D models manifold and ready for 3D printing.

Morphi is a simple, but surprisingly robust, 3D modeling app for iOS that allows users to design 3D models and graphics with easy-to-use and intuitive touchscreen controls. Morphi was recently updated and optimized for iOS 8 and the new version 2.0.0 includes a whole bunch of new features and upgraded functionality.

Yesterday, according to The Verge, Oculus VR announced the acquisition of two companies and the addition of a new team member that indicate the company’s expansion into 3D modeling technology. Not to produce further 3D printing hype, but the Virtual Computing (Andrew Wheeler/Autodesk’s term) space is continuing to collide with our own field of 3DP and I do believe that it’s only a matter of time before we’ll be covering companies like Oculus, Google, Samsung, and Apple on a regular basis. As preliminary as this may be to mention on 3DPI: Oculus VR has purchased 3D modeling and movement-tracking firm 13th Lab and hand-tracking start-up Nimble VR.

On top of the release of more 3D scanners and the acquisition of industrial 3D modeling developer Cimatron, today, 3D Systems has announced a partnership with Luxion, creator of advanced rendering and lighting software. 3D Systems will now implement Luxion’s KeyShot as the standard rendering method for many of 3D Systems’ Geomagic products.
