BREAKING: MakerBot Reportedly Releasing Full-Color, Handheld 3D Scanner

MakerBot’s news from CES is not over, as previously noted. A flurry at CES is news that the company is developing a handheld 3D scanner, freeing its Digitizer from the desk and giving it wings, using technology from Softkinetic and Profactor. The company has not released the scanner’s specs, as of yet, but what is known about the device, which looks unlike any other handheld scanner, is that it will feature a sensor from Softkinect – which will be releasing a hardware SDK kit for the scanner.

How NeoMetrix Technologies is Reverse Engineering the World Via 3D Scanning

It’s part amazing, part scary, the ability for everyday people like you and me to turn physical objects into 3D computer models. Anyone with a 3D scanner, 3D printer, and a little bit of skill is able to pretty much make copies of thousands upon thousands of everyday objects. It sounds like something from Star Trek, but this is our reality, and things are just getting started. Although the laundry list of possible legal implications seems to be overwhelming, this very technology may be a major driver of innovation, affordability, and customization moving forward.

Researchers Combine Robotics & Artec Spider for Unrivaled 3D Scanning of Complex Shapes

As the new year looms and the holiday season comes to a close, we’ve all had our share of wrapping gifts that were complicated in shape, sometimes with numerous angles that poked out all over the place, or with rounded edges that made the thoughtful presentation of a gift equally challenging.

Etron Technology to Unveil New ThingCapture 3D Scanning Technology At International CES Next Week

There is no doubt that 3D imaging technology is improving at an incredibly rapid rate. In fact, it could be argued that there has been more progress made within this space in 2014 alone than the previous 3-4 years combined. We’ve seen several new companies emerge who are focusing on 3D scanning, and the increased popularity of 3D printing seems to be driving innovation forward even further.

Tested In-Depth: Structure Sensor 3D Scanner

Will and Norm sit down to discuss the current state of consumer 3D scanning technologies, including the Structure Sensor 3D scanner. This iPad accessory uses the tablet as its brains to scan rooms and objects in real-time, creating files ready for modeling or 3D printing. It’s what we used to scan Jamie at our live show!
