In Novemeber of last year, Stratasys anticipated a $31.6-to-$24.4 million loss, not good, but definitely better than what they reported on Tuesday. The company instead announced a whopping anticipated loss of $116 million to $129 million (or $2.32 to $2.58 a share), driving Stratasys’ stock price down by 30% that morning.

That means that stocks may be tanking and, yet, 3D printing companies are growing and setting new revenue records. Most are also quite profitable and, even those that are not have invested heavily on future growth. While there has certainly been excitement within the 3D printing industry over the past 24 hours as Carbon3D announced a breakthrough new 3D printing technology, it’s the already established players within the industry who seem to be struggling. While growth continues for some of the larger players, expenses seem to be adding up as competition spawns greater R&D budgets, which in turn equates to plenty of cash spent.

At one point, at the end of 2013, stocks in 3D printing companies were the hottest item on the global exchanges. Everyone wanted in on them, driving prices sky high. Since then they have lost most of their “added” value, dropping between 20% and 80% from their peak point.

As the 3D printing industry experiences massive growth, the stocks behind the companies which are growing seem to be plummeting. This is because there has been a disconnect between the actual market for 3D printers and that for 3D printing stocks.

Selbst die BILD-Zeitung thematisierte die Branche – ein sicheres Indiz, dass die Rally überhitzt war. So kam völlig zwangsläufig die Korrektur auch in den 3D-Druckzertifikaten, waren die Papiere doch zuvor brillant gelaufen, aber eben auch verdammt schnell nach oben geschossen. Gegenwärtig ist es ruhig geworden und dies ist die zweite Chance für Investoren, die in den Bereich hinein wollen. Denn jetzt gibt es die Zertifikate fast zur Hälfte des Höchstkurses – und kaum einer spricht drüber.

The 3D printing space has incredible promise. Growth rates within both the consumer and manufacturing sides of the market have been quite staggering these past couple of years. Where there is growth, there is a keen interest among investors to follow the money. In a nine month period, from around March of 2013 until the very start of this year, we saw stocks within the 3D printing space soar, some close to 300%.
