We all know how important 3D modeling and printing will be in the years to come. If I had children, I would be teaching them at the earliest age possible how to model with CAD software, and ultimately how to use a 3D printer, as the world our children will be entering as adults will likely be foreign to what we are all familiar with today.

Tinkerplay Introduction Video

The Tinkerplay app is based on the popular Modio app, which Autodesk previously acquired, and will join the Tinkercad™ family of products. The Tinkerplay app allows users to design and customize characters and creatures digitally with the option to 3D print afterwards. The 3D printed parts can also be snapped together for dynamic play. With this launch, new parts, features and functionality have been added to make the world of 3D design simple, fun and engaging.

Back in June, we reported on a company called 3DPonics Inc. which launched in order to make available a free to download, 3D printed hydroponics system. With a goal of creating “open source learning”, 3DPonics has continued to expand upon their designs, thanks to the open source community of developers who have taken part in the project. At the same time, the company has also been looking to expand in other directions within the 3D printing space.

Mathias Dietz began 3D printing in 2012 by purchasing a RepRap Prusa Mendel Kit. While he says it took him a few weeks to assemble the kit, build a custom chassis and start printing, he was greatly impressed by the support he got from the community and by the large number of available tools at his disposal.

As 3D printing becomes all the rage, and also becomes more affordable and easily accessible, many learning institutions are jumping on the bandwagon, either adding funds for the new technology into their budgets as that becomes more realistic, or due to public or private grants, they are able to add 3D printers to their labs and libraries after deliberating and shopping for the best fit in their educational scenario.

The MakerBot 3D Ecosystem is growing, including a range of practical and fun apps to create models for printing on accompanying MakerBot 3D printers. The latest addition to the MakerBot-Ready Apps Portal is 3Dponics, the 3D printable hydroponics start-up that funded their modest Kickstarter campaign last summer.
