Winners of MakerBot’s Ghostly Vinyl Challenge Announced

Ann Arbor, Michigan-based record label and design house Ghostly International issued a call for entries on Thingiverse last fall that they hoped would inspire 3D enthusiasts to come up with some creative and innovative 3D printable designs for objects that would appeal to the company’s demographic — people who appreciate music, on any number of levels.

MakerBot to Release Limestone, Maple Wood, Bronze and Iron Composite Filaments in 2015

We have said it once, and we have said it again and again. The next big thing in consumer level 3D printing may not be the hardware itself, but rather the materials that these machines can print with. 2014 saw all sorts of new kinds of 3D printer filaments come to market for FFF/FDM based 3D printers, from a large list of filament manufacturers, and I was expecting to see some of the latest of these when I arrived in Las Vegas for CES 2015 on Monday. However, what I didn’t expect was that MakerBot would be the ones showing these new materials off.

BREAKING: MakerBot Reportedly Releasing Full-Color, Handheld 3D Scanner

MakerBot’s news from CES is not over, as previously noted. A flurry at CES is news that the company is developing a handheld 3D scanner, freeing its Digitizer from the desk and giving it wings, using technology from Softkinetic and Profactor. The company has not released the scanner’s specs, as of yet, but what is known about the device, which looks unlike any other handheld scanner, is that it will feature a sensor from Softkinect – which will be releasing a hardware SDK kit for the scanner.
