Sometimes 3D models seems to be produced by some parts magic, some parts technology, with a big dollop of arts and crafts at the finish line. Designers involved in the process often tend to come up with ideas that leave us with that incredulous, ‘how did you come up with that?

The future of technology just keeps arriving in waves, one after the other, continually improving and offering different benefits — layer after layer — just like the magic of 3D printing itself.

Paper is 20 times cheaper than plastic. Which is why everyone is interested in Ireland’s Mcor Technologies.
Fans of the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind will remember a scene in which Richard Dreyfus sculpts a scale model of the ‘alien’ mountain in his living room. He’s the very picture of the driven obsessive. He just doesn’t have any choice.

3D printers use a wide range of materials, including plastics, plaster powder, photopolymers, nylon, metal and even food products to produce physical 3D models and prototypes. Yet there’s another important 3D printer material to consider – paper. This isn’t origami or papier-mâché. This is advanced SDL (Selective Deposition Lamination) additive manufacturing technology that uses sheets of ordinary copy paper to build physical 3D models layer by layer.
Paper offers several distinct advantages over other materials used by 3D printers. In this two-part blog, you’ll learn the benefits paper, used as the build material in SDL 3D printers, to produce 3D printed models.
Consider the 10 reasons paper is better than other materials for use in 3D printers:

January is now just a memory. We’re well into 2015 and onto February.
For February’s Mcor Model of the Month, we’ve selected this stunning decorative plate 3D printed in True Bitmap Colour on an Mcor IRIS paper-based 3D printer. Yes, that means it was really created from ordinary copy paper, water-based adhesive and water-based ink.

As you may or may not know, Mcor Technologies Ltd is a manufacturer of the only line of paper-based 3D printers. Recently, the company announced that the well-known Italian reprographics firm Digicopy has decided to expand its business with Mcor’s SDL (Selective Deposition Lamination) 3D printing technology, by offering new products and services to increase its customer base.
