Microsoft teams up with CyArk to bring world heritage sites in most detailed 3D to the web

Heritage sites are a significant part of our collective memory and we are losing them at an alarming rate. Using pioneering 3D laser scanning and web technologies, Microsoft has partnered with CyArk, a nonprofit organization to create a brand new website that showcases the world’s most treasured cultural sites. Based on 3D models scanned and built by CyArk, the brand new CyArk.org will feature a number of sites in 3D.

Microsoft and 3D Systems Team up to Offer a Cloud Based Printing Solution via the 3D Builder App

Back in November of last year, Microsoft enter the 3D printing space from a software standpoint. This is when they announced the release of the 3D Builder application for Windows 8.1 machines. Although a small step into the realm of 3D printing for Microsoft, there was little doubt, at least for me, that this was the precursor to a more elaborate plan for the software giant to capitalize on the emerging market.

The biggest challenge to new owners of 3D printers is navigating the series of steps necessary to get that first object printed. Those wanting an „out-the-box-experience“ may be surprised at the amount of work required. From finding (or designing) 3D printable content to calibrating the print bed, 3D printing has yet to become a user-friendly experience for newcomers who want to take advantage of the technology.
