Another week, another fourth quarter and year-end earnings report from a publicly traded 3D printing company. After the market closed yesterday, Friedberg, Germany-based voxeljet AG (NYSE:VJET) reported earnings. After a year which has been anything but rosy for the entire industry, voxeljet investors looked towards this report for a glimmer of hope, and boy did they get one.

3D printing is revolutionizing manufacturing as we’ve come to know it — but a revolution doesn’t always mean a sea change with completely new techniques. Innovation is built on established history, and with casting techniques having been used for centuries in the production of tools, parts, and other manufactured goods, there’s no need to reinvent the wheel. Although the stock market has not been kind to 3D printing companies as of late, the financial economy is one thing and the real economy is oftentimes something entirely different. That means that stocks may be tanking and, yet, 3D printing companies are growing and setting new revenue records. Most are also quite profitable and, even those that are not have invested heavily on future growth. So, here is 3DPI’s list of the top 10 public pure-play 3D printing companies for yearly turnover, with Stratasys taking the market’s lead.

I don’t usually like to write articles on a company’s yearly financial guidance; I generally prefer “harder data”, like actual financial results; however I think it is worth it to make an exception for voxeljet, a company which, in a way, has become the perfect example for the volatility of 3D printing stocks on financial markets and is now expecting up to 50% growth in 2015.

If you’ve been investing in 3D printing stocks as of late, then you are likely feeling the pain. Many stocks within the industry are trading at prices that we have not seen in over two years. After a major run-up seen within the market at the end of 2013 and beginning of last year, the balloon has inflated quite a bit, or depending on your tolerance, may have popped.

Wir erinnern uns ein Jahr zurück! Die Analysten überschlugen sich mit Kurszielen für den 3D-Drucksektor, das Potenzial der Branche konnte gar nicht hoch genug eingeschätzt werden und viele Medien zählten auf, wo überall 3D-Druck in Zukunft unser Leben verändern wird. Selbst die BILD-Zeitung thematisierte die Branche – ein sicheres Indiz, dass die Rally überhitzt war. So kam völlig zwangsläufig die Korrektur auch in den 3D-Druckzertifikaten, waren die Papiere doch zuvor brillant gelaufen, aber eben auch verdammt schnell nach oben geschossen. Gegenwärtig ist es ruhig geworden und dies ist die zweite Chance für Investoren, die in den Bereich hinein wollen. Denn jetzt gibt es die Zertifikate fast zur Hälfte des Höchstkurses – und kaum einer spricht drüber.

voxeljet is one of the larger companies within the 3D printing space. They manufacture several industrial level, high-speed, large-format 3D printers, as well as offer on-demand printing of parts. Their 3D printers differ quite a bit from other technologies on the market today, as they utilize a powder binding method, relying on particulate materials (i.e. sand) and various chemical binding agents.

This has been a very busy week for 3D printing-related stocks. After a mediocre report by Stratasys last week, followed by 3D Systems reporting numbers better than expected on Monday, and ExOne giving the market a surprise to the downside yesterday, those who invest within the sector must be feeling like they are on the roller coaster from hell.
